Via Ferrata

If you are keen to try your hand at rock climbing but are worried about the risks, then why not try Via Ferrata. Literally translated as Iron Road, Via Ferrata originated during the First World War as an aid to manoeuvring troops safely across the Italian Dolomites. In practise it refers to a mountain route pre-equipped with fixed cables, ladders and bridges that allow walkers and climbers to experience routes that would otherwise be the sole domain of expert rock-climbers.

A family-friendly cross between hiking and climbing, participants are permanently attached to the mountain via a harness, so falling isn’t an option! With the famous Via Ferrata du Mont just a couple of minutes drive from Samoëns the region is a popular destination for those with previous via ferrata experience and also those looking to try something new.

There are a number of via ferrata options within a few minutes drive of Samoëns although the most famous is the Via Ferrata du Mont where the climb reaches high above the fabulous Tines Gorge on the outskirts of Sixt Fer à Cheval.

For those with prior via ferrata experience then equipment can be rented locally and the attached guide provides details of the vie ferrate route.  However, for those looking to experience via ferrata for the first time then we would recommend taking one of the local guides in order to ensure your safety.
