Tête des Saix to Lac de Gers – Samoëns

By taking the Grand Massif and Chariande Express lifts you can quickly reach the top of Samoëns from where you can start a number of tremendous hikes. We decided on a loop track walk that had been recommended to us by some guests from earlier in the summer.

From Tête des Saix at just over 2,100m we followed what would be the blue runs of “Silice Malice” (downhill) and “Dolomie” (long slog uphill) across to Les Grands Vans where we found a flock of sheep waiting for the lift to open!

As we reached Grands Vans the few clouds over Mont Blanc cleared and we had the most perfect view of the Mont Blanc range. We decided that it must be an omen to stop for an early lunch and bask in the breath-taking views, Mont Blanc to the south and views of Lac De Gers and the Sixt Fer-à-Cheval valley to the east.

After lunch the walking track took us ‘off-piste’ down Les Lanches Fleuries into the Combe de Gers. Whilst some of the path down Les Lanches Fleuries was pretty steep (making Vicky glad she’d brought her new walking-poles), we were treated to stunning views of the Lac de Gers and also beautiful vistas of summer flowers growing up the valley side.

By the time we reached the Gîte on the shores of the lake our knees were only too pleased to have a rest as we stopped for a caffeine top-up. The view across the lake in the late afternoon was stunning as the sunlight shimmered across the water.  We’d have been quite happy sitting there for longer but knowing we still had a couple of hours walking to do we headed off in the direction of Samoëns and the promise of a take-away pizza for tea!

A great day out and a beautiful walk, certainly one that we’ll be recommending to our guests in the future!
